Dress Code
Dress and Appearance Philosophy: The aim of the dress code is to promote a conservative, healthy, positive, professional atmosphere while maintaining Biblical standards and promoting male and female distinction. We see this as an opportunity to develop a desirable character in the life of each student. All students will be expected to maintain high standards of neatness, bodily cleanliness, modest grooming and apparel at all times while on school campus or at a school sponsored event. All students are expected to dress in accordance with their biological genders. A uniform is required for before, during, and after regular school. For other school functions, on and off campus, a similar, very modest attire is required.
Violations of Dress Code:
Students who are not in dress code may have parents called to bring new clothing or be sent home. Consequences may be given for multiple infractions or disobedience when told directly.
General Guidelines for All Students:
Hair
Boys – Conservative, tapered cut, off the ears, above the collar, out of eyes, no modern mullets. Hair must be of a natural color with NO stripes, lines, or shapes cut into hair, NO cornrows or braids. Extra curly hair should be a shorter length. No facial hair.
Girls – Conservative hairstyle with a natural color. If desired, hair may be highlighted with a natural hair color. Hair must be long enough to look like a girl (Hair may not be shaved in part as well).
Jewelry
Boys – necklaces, earrings, and bracelets are not allowed.
No make-up with the exception for costume make-up during dramatic performances.
Girls – 1 ring per hand, 1 bracelet per arm. No more than 2 earrings per ear. Earrings must be no bigger than a quarter,
Make-up: middle/high school only - it should be moderate
Tattoos and Body Piercings
With the rising fad of tattoos and body piercings, we make the following statement for students attending Sonshine. No piercings are allowed for boys or girls (except above mentioned 2 earrings per ear for girls). Students are to refrain totally from tattoos, permanent or temporary. If a new enrollee already has a tattoo, it must be covered at all times and not be visible to students or staff. No student is permitted to get a tattoo while enrolled at Sonshine.
Uniforms
The school uniform consists of a SCA logo shirt (purchased in office) and khaki bottoms and will be worn each day (with exceptions listed below). The school uniform dress code applies to before, during, and extended care times.
● The khaki bottoms are to be purchased elsewhere and are to fit well at the waistline - No baggy, “hanging on hips” look, no cargo pants, Relaxed and straight leg fitting pants - NOT tight, SKINNY, or form fitting. Girls may wear loose fitting capris or knee length skirts. All students in K-3 to 6th grade may wear khaki shorts as well.
● Nice, closed toe and back, athletic or casual shoes may be worn and must be kept nice and clean. Belts are to be worn and shirts are to be kept tucked in at all times.
● Dress for formal activities would include a high standard of modesty and conservatism with high neckline on dresses and length to middle of knee when standing erect. All tops must include a sleeve of at least 3 inches when measured from the top of the shoulder.
● At casual occasions, such as watching sports events, where a specific dress code is not required, additional standards include no belly showing tops/bottoms, tank tops/spaghetti straps, clothing with offensive words or pictures, or short shorts.
● While the school uniform is not required at all school functions, we do require the above dress standards to be met at all times while attending a school sponsored event.
● On Friday dress down days, the current SCA Spirit shirt and (long - not shorts) BLUE denim jeans may be worn. Jeans should not be shorts, tight, SKINNY, or form fitting. Jeans may not include holes or rips. Permission may be given to wear SCA Spirit shirts on particular field trips.
● K5 – 12th grades: P.E. – Sonshine P.E. uniforms must be purchased from the office. Shorts must be at knee length, and students should wear only athletic type shoes for P.E. (no boots.) Permission may be given to wear P.E. clothes for particular field trips. Students are not allowed to participate in P.E. classes if they are not dressed in proper P.E. clothing. These students will receive a 0% for their grade. If a student misses three classes (by unexcused leaving early or absences) in a quarter, it will result in failing P.E. class for that quarter. Students may only be excused from P.E. class by a written excuse from their doctor.
● K5 – 8th grade – may wear their school P.E. uniform all day at school on P.E. day.
● 9th – 12th grade – must bring their P.E. clothes and change.
● Jackets/ Sweatshirts/ Sweaters: Students may wear in the buildings and inside and outside the classrooms, a Sonshine jacket (purchase in office) or any plain, solid colored Navy blue jacket, sweater, or sweatshirt without any pictures, words, or logos (a TINY brand logo will be ok). Hoods may NOT be worn on campus. For safety, we must immediately identify every person on campus! Other jackets may be worn to school but removed before entering the building. Negative logos/ word/ images are still prohibited, at administration's discretion.
